The Oxford English Dictionary defines boda boda as “a type of motorcycle or bicycle with a space for a passenger or for carrying goods, often used as a taxi”.
The first bicycle taxis were used in the 1970s in Busia on the Ugandan-Kenyan border. Ugandans took them to cross the border for essential supplies such as fuel following the state of civil unrest in the country that wrecked the economy. Accordingly, the term boda boda originates from the words “border to border”.
Nowadays, boda bodas are a primary means of urban transport, especially in Kampala to avoid traffic jam.

Die ersten Fahrradtaxis wurden in den 1970er Jahren in Busia an der Grenze zwischen Uganda und Kenia benutzt. Die Ugander nahmen sie, um wichtige Güter wie Treibstoff zu kaufen, nachdem Unruhen im Land die Wirtschaft ruiniert hatten. Dementsprechend hat der Begriff Boda Boda seinen Ursprung in den englischen Worten „border to border“ („Grenze zur Grenze“).
Heutzutage sind Boda Bodas vor allem in Kampala eines der wichtigsten Transortmittel, hauptsächlich um Stau zu umgehen.

Les premiers taxis-bicyclette ont été utilisés dans les années 1970 à Busia, à la frontière entre l’Ouganda et le Kenya. Les Ougandais les ont utilisés pour traverser la frontière pour des marchandises essentielles telles que du carburant suite à l’état d’agitation civile dans le pays qui a ruiné l’économie. En conséquence, le terme boda boda provient des mots «frontière à la frontière».
De nos jours, les boda bodas sont un moyen de transport urbain essentiel, notamment à Kampala pour éviter les embouteillages.
