That Balkan Summer

My summer holiday was magical. Full of hitchhiking and camping adventures across Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Greece. The perfect balance of travelling/meeting new people and relaxing/catching up with old friends. I read more books in the last few weeks than all year, my hair went blonder than ever, I met some very inspiring people along the way and I still can’t believe how amazing everything went.

Top moments:

– hitchhiking motorbikes in Greece. 50km of pure adrenaline.
– a week of volunteering at Camp Full Monte in Montenegro – guys, if you ever make it to this beautiful country do not miss this campsite.
– Friday night in a small fisherman’s village in Croatia, dancing with the locals and staying up till dawn.
– the Bosnian band Dubioza Kolektiv at Sea Dance Festival in Montenegro.
– three very chilled days at My Olive Garden Camp in Montenegro – no beaches, now crowds, but a small lagoon, olive trees and the homeliest atmosphere.
– counting statues in Skopje.
– being invited for coffee with some locals in Macedonia after one of them had picked us up on the road.
– four of us cuddled up in a two-man tent during a wicked storm in Croatia.
– Biofarma Camp at Lake Skadar in Montenegro. Lots of animals, a huge veggie garden and the best monk in the world sharing his wine and tobacco with us.
– talking BCS to locals in Montenegro, Croatia and Macedonia and them actually noticing my Bosnian accent.
– Istanbul Grand Bazar – all those colouful spices and flying carpets!

Flop moments:

– leaving my purse on the bus from Sarajevo to Zenica one day before I started travelling – luckily the bus was still at the station and I had my credit card and everything back within half an hour.
– half a bottle of sunflower oil opening in the bottom of my backpack and leaking onto my sleeping mat amongst other things – yuck.
– sitting at an awful campsite near Skopje in the rain and having to change our plans about Pirin National Park in Bulgaria
– Dubrovnik. Serioulsy, how can the architecture and history of a town be enjoyable if there’s so many fancy restaurants, souvenir shops and camera-clicking tourists around?
– Istanbul Grand Bazar – „I’m just looking, okay?!“

My camera stayed at home for these 7 weeks which resulted in me only taking a handful of pictures with my phone along the way.

School has started again so I’m getting back to so-called normal life again. A lot of new faces and names to remember, little projects coming up and I can’t wait for some autumnal colours to start spreading their way through town. It’s supposed to be nice here in autumn. At least that’s what many Zenicans have told me. Not so much in winter, there’s still a few months to go luckily.
