City Hall/Library in Sarajevo
After the school holidays started mid June, I left my little flat in Zenica for a month and moved to Sarajevo to work at the Goethe-Institute and check out the capital a bit for a change.
I moved into a room in Ana’s flat, which turned out to be such a good decision. Her cat Lizzie was always good company, same counts for Ana of course! And since she also works at the Institute we’d drive in together every day and even worked from home twice a week. Basically I helped out with a book documenting 7 years of the PASCH-initative (more here) and the 7 partner schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina (one of which is my school in Zenica). I read up on all the projects and competitions they organised and started writing articles and sorting pictures. Of course I had to do typical intern jobs too from time to time, but everyone at the office is friendly and cool, so I enjoyed the atmosphere. It was interesting to look into what the Goethe Institute does and I’m glad I had the opportunity.

Same counts for life in Sarajevo in general. Even though I never got bored in Zenica, it was quite a difference to see how much is going on in the capital. Lots of interesting (international) people showing me the best parts of the city and always introducing me to new faces, cool events in the evenings and at the weekends.

Zlatna Ribica – Gold Fish. A quirky little bar

At one of the best tea places – Cajdzinica Dzirlo.

And beginning of July my parents came for a long weekend – I’m happy we managed to organise that. They enjoyed Sarajevo and surroundings a lot and said how positively surprised they were – the name Sarajevo still being associated with a lot of brutal history. I’m glad they enjoyed the trip and I was able to show them a part of the world they haven’t been to and probably wouldn’t have thought of visiting without me being here. Apart from catching up, walking through town and enjoying beers we also hiked up one of the highest peaks in BiH (Bjelasnica, 2067 m) which turned out to be a pretty long walk but with with an amazing view at the top.
And even though I loved this month in Sarajevo, I’m secretly quite glad to be living in Zenica most of the year. Of course I enjoyed meeting people from abroad doing similar things as me, but Zenica just seems a little more authentic. I think it’s better for me and the priorities I’ve set myself for this year.
Next stop now is a festival in Montenegro, then camping in Croatia and all in all lots of plans for a good summer on the Balkans.
