Über die PASCH-Initative

Schulgeschichten

A thursday morning, half past six. For the first time in a couple of days I finally manage to get to school in time. The two security guards welcome me with a „Buenos dias, Profe“ (although the title doesn’t quite fit). I continue making my may with my bike, passing by the preschool and continuing across the courtyard of the Primaria, the elemantary school.  HOOOLA JUULA and even a “Guten Morgen, Jule!” is what I get to hear of the laughing faces of children, loaded with energy. After I’ve put my bike behind the house, a girl from third grade comes running towards me and tells we with a bunch of excitement that her aunt in Germany is going to have a baby soon. A boy shows me his new acquirement: an animal sticker. All in all, just the usual loads of enthusiasm and so much happiness that it´s truly contagious.

Later in the day, all German teachers have to attend a conference. I prefer to subtly avoid going. Instead, I use the time to get me a cup of tea from the staff room and finally get to writing down a little about the dearest school and what I’m actually doing here all day.

The days can be as diverse as the students themselves are. Already when looking at the different ages united in the school it becomes quite obvious: from 4 to 18 years of age, everything is represented.

The 4 hours of preschool during which I help out and support the teachers have grown to be one of my personal highlights every week, including the singing and drawing activities. The huge group hug that is formed around you in the very second you enter the classroom is just the greatest. So much love!

Besides, my responsibilities reach from preparation and checking quizes to more active parts. Quite often, we split a class up into two groups. One then stays with the teacher, while I take the other with me. Then I annoy them with the correct pronounciation of the German Ö or with past tenses in the lyrics of currently popular German bands. It is pretty fun to be honest, and working with half a class is just the best! But also in an undivided class there’s many ways of being useful by helping out where help is needed, being a walking dictionary or answering the whole catalog of questions that sometimes arises. Because yes, German is a difficult language to learn, but fortunately not impossible, neither.

It really is an experience how I’m seemingly learning my own native tongue all other again. Many of the questions, especially concerning grammar, I still have to forward to the knowing internet or a knowing German teacher. The questions asking for a why are the most impossible to answer.

The classroom only for the German classes that we have here in the school really is a treasure. Thanks Goethe institute! Projector, computers, a little library with German books and loads and loads of material really enable the teachers as well as me to create class concepts that are more creative and simply more interesting. My four favorite German teachers are the most likeable and kind persons ever and I could not have wished for better ones to be supporting. Neither ones with a better taste of music. 😉 The atmosphere in the German room is just totally relaxed, there’s always some song being played and some joke being made.

Additionally, the Centro Educativo Scalas definitely is a place where special happenings never are missing. Teachers playing a soccer match during lunch break, dress up day for the whole entire school and a big dance for halloween or a birthday celebration for the president of the school with lots of fancy cake and a birthday song by the small choir the school has are just a few options of what could be going on. Colombia being one of the countries with the most nacional holidays doesn’t only mean that we get a lot of 3 day weekends but also that they trigger fun activities during school days.

And: school grounds that appear more friendly and more green are very hard to imagine!

On the grass the kids from preschool right now are playing tag with the sport’s teacher. From my workplace I have the best of views of what’s going on. Bogota sun beams are lighting up the German room through the big windows. The teacher´s conference is over. „Jule, do you want to come along to 801? Some students still have to present their dialogues with the modal verbs.“ Of course, I’d love to.
